Since some year C.A.A. started a research program aimed at developing a Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) strategy against Aedes albopictus, the most important noxious and sanitary mosquito species in Italy.
The species is relatively easy to mass rear in artificial conditions. Up to now we are able to produce 100,000 males per week in climatic chambers under standard laboratory conditions (28°C, 85% RH, 16 h scotophase).
Currently, aged male pupae are exposed to gamma rays in order to obtain a permanent sterility in the adult males. Following irradiation sterile pupae are released using simple plastic container with water.
